Not sure where to start when it comes to choosing your wedding cake? Here are some tips that will get you going.
1. How many guests have you got attending? this will determine the size of cake you will need to look at. You want to make sure that there is enough for all your guests, but you also don’t want a lot left over that may go to waste!
2. Set a budget, like everything else when it comes to planning your wedding, you can get carried away and end up spending a lot more that you needed or intended to! The price of wedding cakes vary, depending on how many tiers your having and what decorations your having. If you opt for a large cake with a lot of detail you will be paying considerably more, as you need to remember that you are also paying for a highly qualified and experienced bakers time and expertise.
3. Find out if your chosen baker is willing to arrange a tasting for you, this way you can choose what type of cake you would like, and more importantly, if the baker is any good!
4. You want your cake to look amazing but you also want it to taste amazing! There are a few different option when it comes to flavour and type of cake that you can have, such as fruit, vanilla, chocolate, sponge and even cheesecake. Icing options are butter cream, royal icing, marzipan and fondant.
5. Choose decoration and colours that work with your theme. If you want something simple , perhaps traditional white icing and flowers that you are using throughout your venue. However flowers are a great cake decoration regardless of icing or cake flavour! Bold, vibrant colours and cakes that show your personality are also great and becoming very popular!
6. When and where are you getting married? If you are having a summer wedding or getting married abroad, then take care which cake you choose as certain ingredients and decorations may not work well in the heat.
7. Order your cake at least 6-8 weeks in advance, leaving plenty of time for your baker to get everything done and organised , some cakes designs can take a while, and certain ingredients may need ordering.
8. When visiting bakers take along pictures and designs of the type of cake you would like.
9. Take samples of colours that your theme will be based on, this will also help your baker design something unique for you.
10 Decide on a cake topper, you could go for the traditional bride and groom cake topper or have one designed especially for you. There are some great unique and humorous cake toppers out there, so why not choose something a little different?!
